Why Indian Feather Headdress is Important Today

For the Native American Indian tribes, a feather headdress is only worn by the most powerful member of the tribe especially the chieftains that have won countless battles. It symbolizes bravery, leadership and honor.  The Indian tribe feather headdress was made of real eagle, hawks and crow’s feathers. The first tribe who was recognized wearing this type of headdress is the Sioux Indian tribe. The tribe adorned the headdress with colorful materials made of beads and leather. They have used authentic materials so that the headdress will last for several years.

This Indian feather headdress has different styles and colors. It varies form one tribe to another. There are some tribes that wore large and colorful headdresses and there are some that wore smaller ones with the original colors of the feathers. Indian chiefs have usually worn an Indian feather headdress that has vibrant colors. For the tribe that wore colorful headdresses, vibrant colors for them have significant symbolic meaning. They symbolize bravery and dedication of individuals to the tribes during the wars for several years.

This is the reason why Indian feather headdresses are significant to American Indian tribes as well as to others who are collecting them.

Traditionally, the Indian headdress is made of authentic leather and eagle’s feathers (if eagles were around). Folklore suggests that the wearer assumes the protection of the animals from whom the headdress is made up of. Since eagles are revered and believed to be the messenger of the gods, a warrior has to earn every single feather that is to be put in his headdress.

Authentic leather that can be embellished with beads and other tribal designs can also adorn the Indian headdress. Today, Indian headdress replicas being sold in the market are made of duck feathers and leather also embellished with colorful beads.

Names of Fangirls: Chihiro and Chua

Fangirls School Grade: 3rd

Chihiro likes to read about American History and Presidents. Chieko loves doing a lot of drawing and other art crafts. They love collecting toys and love to watch toy reviews… and of course they love watching Doctor Who, Star Wars, Big Hero 6, Guardians of The Galaxy and other superhero shows.

Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on these Fangirls?

We nominated our twin daughters because they’re very creative. They always amaze us with crafty stuff they make. They will cut paper, cardboard box and then make an animal, creature, spaceship, lightsaber to even a Doctor Who K-9 or a TARDIS!

How do these Fangirls express their fandom?

They like to dress up at conventions and they really get into character when they wear their costumes!

Name of Fangirl: Caitlin

Fangirl’s Occupation: Chemical engineer

What is her Fangirl interest?

For this submission, Star Wars, specifically Ahsoka Tano. Ahsoka is the character that really pulled her into the Star Wars universe (which I have been a lifelong fan of and imposing on her for years). Ahsoka’s development into an incredibly strong female leader and all around badass was an inspiration. We both feel that Ahsoka is the best new character, and probably the best overall event/story arc to be added to Star Wars in a long time. My wife was ecstatic to see Ahsoka’s return in Rebels finale and immediately told me we were making Star Wars costumes for Denver’s Comic Con.

Outside of Star Wars she’s a PC gamer (World of Warcraft, Diablo, Borderlands, Guild Wars), a fan of the Marvel cinematic universe (especially Guardians), and an avid reader of sci-fi and fantasy literature.

Why did you decide to shine the spotlight on this Fangirl?

She’s my wife and I love her quite a lot. Also, because she put a bunch of work into this cosplay and I think it is one of the first quality Star Wars Rebels Ahsoka cosplays out there. Plus, like I said, she made it all herself, and this is her first cosplay and attempt at many of the techniques she used to make the costume (except for the pants). Just as a bragging point, the montrals are cast from latex, so they move pretty organically and look almost like living tissue in person. Also also because she’s my life and I love her a lot.

Also, on a more personal note she lets me be as a huge of a nerd as I want to be about my own hobbies and our shared ones. I cannot thank her enough for allowing me to be myself and encouraging me to do so.

How does this Fangirl express her fandom?

Most recently with Cosplay and conventions, but that is a new venture for her. Previously she’s built gaming computers, attended movie premiers for countless fantasy, sci-fu, and comic movies, and done some hardcore raiding in WoW.

She also made a Han Solo running outfit to do a gender bender cosplay for the inaugural Star Wars 10k and 1/2 marathon this past January.

Also, our wedding was at a castle, the tables were themed by various nerdoms, we cut our wedding cake with a knife that had a lightsaber hilt, and we both quoted Pokemon in our wedding vows (unplanned). Oh, and her wedding dress had a lace cloak with a hood. Coolest wedding dress ever.

What is her favorite quote or personal motto?

“Screw that noise!” (ClapTrap from Borderlands)

What is her favorite Fangirl item that she cannot live without?

As of the creation of this costume, probably her Ahsoka montrals. After her Ahsoka Clone Wars lightsaber from Saberforge arrives (as her anniversary present, I’d like to take this moment to reiterate how much I love my wife and the fact that a lightsaber is an acceptable, nay exemplary, anniversary present) that might take the cake. Prior to this cosplay, it was probably her How to Train Your Dragon shirt with Toothless +/- her gaming PC.

This Could Be The Best Motivation To Exercise

embedPhotographed by Jens Ingvarsson.
The best workout motivation might not be accountability partners or compliments, but punishments. Shape reports that a recent study found punishment, rather than positive reinforcement, to be the best incentive for participants.

Related: Processed Foods May Kill Off Bugs That Keep You Thin

Participants in the study were asked to play a game in which they either listened to clicking noises and identified which ear they heard the noise from, or they saw lights on a computer screen and labeled which side of the screen had more flashes. For every question answered correctly, they were given a token. For every question answered incorrectly, tokens were taken away. Shape explains the “scientists did indeed find that both methods helped improve performance. However, punishment was far more effective than reward — two to three times more incentivizing, in fact.”

Related: Master This Move: Stir The Pot

Shape noted that you can apply this to your workout routine by setting up small incentives or punishments for yourself by deciding what “you'd personally hate to lose — like watching Game of Thrones on time so you can gossip about it at the office the next day”

Just be aware, as sports psychologist and therapist at Saint Francis University, Ariane Machin, PhD, explains, "An individual needs to be thoughtful about what they are using as 'punishers' because they don't want to become demoralized or discouraged.” So as long as your punishers don’t make you feel worse, this could be just the trick to get in gear.

9 NYC Memoirs Giving Carrie Bradshaw A Run For Her Money

Earlier this week in The New York Times, authors Leslie Jamison and Benjamin Moser debated whether someone should reach a certain age before writing a memoir. Arguing on behalf of Team Youth, Jamison writes, "Of course someone will look back at his first broken heart with a different perspective at the age of 40, or 60, or 80...The narratives we tell about our own lives are constantly in flux; our perspectives at each age are differently valuable. What age gains in remove it loses in immediacy: The younger version of a story gets told at closer proximity, with more fine-grain texture and less aerial perspective."

We agree. While there's certainly something to be gained from self-reflection through an older, more mature lens, we've seen that young writers are more than capable of producing powerful autobiographical work.

Need proof? These nine New York women make it clear that experience doesn't only come with age — and that sometimes, the moments that make for the greatest stories are best recounted well before you're 40.

And The Heart Says Whatever by Emily Gould
A truthful account of being a 20-something in a city that forces you to become an adult — even if you aren't ready. There's honesty about working in the digital age (before it became a completely over-saturated industry), failed relationships, and how New York not only changes you, but changes with you.

Brain On Fire: My Month Of Madness by Susannah Cahalan
A haunting reminder that one day you can be a normal, hard-partying 20-something, and the next you can be hospitalized with no recollection of how you ended up there. Diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease, Cahalan catalogues her struggle and recovery in a way that is not just frightening, but also frighteningly honest.

Not That Kind Of Girl by Lena Dunham
Sharp, witty writings from the woman who redefined what it's like to be a young New Yorker, Dunham's stories of struggling with her weight, combatting obsessive-compulsive disorder, and overcoming a college rape will have you laughing, crying, and wondering how she knows exactly what you're going through, too.

Hypocrite In A Pouffy White Dress: Tales Of Growing Up Groovy And Clueless by Susan Jane Gilman
Gilman takes you back in time to the Upper West Side of the '70s, sharing what it was really like to grow up in a city where anything can happen, and how struggles (like divorce and religious discovery) eventually shape you into the powerful feminist you hope to be.

Dear Diary by Lesley Arfin
Born out of Lesley Arfin's Vice column of the same name, this memoir describes how a rebellious Long Island teen became a fixture of the city's downtown "It" crowd, with friends like Chloë Sevigny and Jesse Pearson — and a raging heroin addiction. The book is filled with self-discovery and reflection, and is proof that you can royally fuck up your 20s and still come out on top.

Spinster: Making A Life Of One's Own by Kate Bolick
Feeling sad about being single? Bolick's Samantha Jones-esque memoir celebrates the power of being a party of "one," especially in a city like New York. Throughout her own journey of finding "the one," she pulls inspiration from "famous singles" such as Edith Wharton and Maeve Brennan to help her rediscover her "self" — no relationship required.

Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel
When your 10-year-long struggle with depression becomes too much to handle, where do you turn? For Wurtzel, the proof was in the pudding Prozac. The lead-up to her medication is jam-packed with recipes for disaster: obsessing over an illness, embarking on sexual escapades while enrolled at Harvard, and longing for too much attention from her family and friends.

The Long Goodbye: A Memoir by Meghan O'Rourke
The loss of a parent is never easy to overcome, but O'Rourke's personal account of her mother's death sheds light on the mourning process, particularly as a young woman. Her story illuminates moments and feelings we never want to discuss, things that we are all bound to face at some point in our lives, such as loneliness, sadness, and the fear of the unknown.

Man Repeller: Seeking Love. Finding Overalls. by Leandra Medine

Gwyneth Paltrow's New Business Involves Frosting Shots

gwyneth_EMBEDPhoto: David Fisher/REX USA
Goop lovers, get ready: Gwyneth Paltrow has some amazing new snacks for you! Just in time for summer, the actress, in partnership with noted celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson and Anderson's CEO, Maria Baum, is launching food take-out company 3 Green Hearts, Hamptons Magazine reports.

The company will sell healthy, organic meals to-go out of Anderson's East Hampton and Water Mill studios, and while many of the tasty sounding offerings are just what you would expect from the healthy-lifestyle loving Paltrow — made-that-day juices, quinoa, and kale ravioli — others are a bit more unexpected. Like FROSTING SHOTS. (You read that right.)

Tracy Anderson told Hamptons Magazine, "I'm a major foodie so there's also going to be frosting shots, but the frosting is going to be made without all of the processed things that really hurt us. I've figured out how to make the best cookies that have no gluten, no soy, no dairy, no nuts, no eggs — all the main allergens. It's also about me being able to settle the inflammation fire that is in so many bodies."

Anderson tells the magazine that the entrepreneurial ladies plan to offer 3 Green Hearts cuisine at other Tracy Anderson Studios locations in the future, and also hope to eventually evolve the brand to also include green cleaning products and beauty products that are paraben-free.

All of which sounds well and good, but in the meantime: You had us at frosting shots. Cheers!

Landon, Help! What's The 411 On Flatforms?

embedCourtesy of ASOS.
Amelia writes: "Help! I'm currently in the middle of a Spice Girls obsession revival and I want to pull of the platform boot. But, with summer approaching, knee-high anythings are not exactly ideal. Can you help me find a hot weather-proof alternative so my legs (and feet) don't schvitz?"

Flatforms have their pros and cons. They're really cute, they're leg-lengthening, and they serve as the perfect median between a wedge and a sandal. But, if you've ever owned a pair, you're familiar with their sometimes dangerous, ankle-threatening tendencies, despite them being "flat."

Fashion forward? Yes. Practical? Yes — if you pick them correctly. The slip-on route is an ankle sprain waiting to happen and something completely flat-footed will make you walk all funny. Take a look at the shape of the wedge. Is it so flat that you could frost a cake with it? Or, does it pitch upwards at the front? Go for the latter so you can strut — not Frankenstein stomp — to where you need to go. Your Achilles tendons will thank you.

And, make sure there's a strap on the back. This not only prevents them from slipping off, but it'll aid in keeping the shoe and your ankle stepping in perfect unison. Also, keep the materials light. No one wants to carry five pound weights on the bottom of their feet.

This pair from ASOS combines my favorite colors (black and blue) and my favorite materials (satin and leather). They're A) as comfortable as they look, B) fit the flatform requirements listed above, and C) they're only $90. A flatform should mold to the bottom of your foot — not work against it. We're not living in the Middle Ages, for Pete's sake.

I hope this helps. See you next Saturday.

Seriously Inspiring New Ways To Pull Off Flash Tattoos

We first caught wind of the Flash Tattoo trend last summer, when stylish girls started donning the temporary tats to the beach in place of real bling — you know, as one does. Since then, the metallic tats have turned into a beauty phenomenon, seen on everyone from big-name bloggers to our girl Queen Bey. The shiny designs also became all the rage at music festivals like Coachella, adding an instant hippie-chic vibe to every ensemble.

Like most trends, this one reached a saturation point. But, since we're not ready to let go just yet, we’re determined to find new, innovative ways to wear it for summer 2015 — and it looks like we're not the only ones. The possibilities are endless — and good old Instagram (you may have heard of it?) is proof.

After hours of patrolling the ‘gram, we were sufficiently in awe of all the pretty ways you can wear these tats. And, we found 17 rad Flash styles worthy of gracing your precious skin. (Note: What did people do before social media? #RealTalk.)

So, whether you’re feeling so over flash tats or you’re still all about them, we’d be willing to bet you’ll feel more than tempted to try out some new styles after you see these fresh takes on the 2k14 trend.

Flash Tattoos recently collaborated with Rainforest Partnership to bring us its newest collection, Illia, which was inspired by the "beauty and magic of the rainforest" and features vibrant, in-your-face pops of color. Your choices: Go big and bedazzle your back with butterflies for your next beach trip, or be subtle and add a single neon feather or bracelet — whatever your style, it’s for an amazing cause.

Bored of your basic mono nail hues? Upgrade your mani game by adding these chic, mini-chevron accent designs from the Dakota collection to one, or all, of your nails. Depending on your base shade, you can achieve both edgy and super-girly looks — whatever floats your boat.

Make a statement by using the black-and-gold "pendants" from the Zahra collection to create your own customized hand jewelry — you’ll never look cooler hailing a cab.

Heading to paradise? Impress fellow beachgoers with these beautiful metallic elephants — they look better in pairs.

To put it simply, celebrity hairstylist and co-owner of Nine Zero One Salon Riawna Capri just gets us. Not only are we obsessed with her new boho home, but Capri takes cool to a whole new level by sporting a full-on flash sleeve. P.S. How gorgeous is her smile?!

Have a fancy event coming up? Add a hint o' glam and highlight your manicure with these silver triangles from the Dakota collection.

British beauty guru and author of The Glam Guide Fleur de Force demonstrates how to accentuate your jewelry with silver and gold tats.

If you’re feelin’ flashy, try replacing your usual earrings with a temp tat like this one from the fabulous Josephine collection.

Fashion blogger and frequent Flash Tat wearer Natalia T. makes us question why we haven’t been donning delicate silver dots on our wrists all our lives.

Tiny gold feathers and stars can make your day of typing away that much more fun. We can’t get enough of this look.

Spice things up with a partially hidden tat — it'll be your sexy little secret.

We're impressed by how effortlessly blogger Andrea Chong flaunts a thick gold cuff band on her upper arm — it adds a subtle touch of bohemian, yet sophisticated glimmer to her otherwise minimalistic outfit.

We’ll be the first to tell you that you don’t have to go flash-wild to make a noticeable statement. This look is still eye-catching, but in a rad, understated way.

Mixing black and gold offers an edgy vibe, especially when it's in unexpected places. Rock this style with some stilettos, and you’ll look — and feel — ready to take the world by storm.

Heading to a summer wedding? This low-key, ultra-feminine look is speaking to us in all the right ways. Try a floral pattern from the Isabella or Sheebani collections — worn alone or mixed with other jewels, you’ll be sure to turn heads.

Killer heels? Check. Gold cuff band? Double check. Simplicity won’t go unnoticed, people — especially when paired with statement shoes.

Take your accessorizing up a notch by mixing delicate hints of gold, black, and silver tats with your existing hand candy.

Before Pantone Color Chips, There Was This 300-Year-Old Book

pantone-colorsPhoto: Aix-en-Provence, bibliothèque Méjanes, Ms 1389 (1228).
The announcement of the Pantone Color of the Year has become something of an annual phenomenon. As the recognized authority on color and color trends, Pantone doesn’t simply suggest you keep your eyes peeled for Radiant Orchid, Emerald, or Marsala for the next 12 months, it practically guarantees that you’ll be seeing the shade everywhere on cars, bed sheets, nail polishes, back-to-school supplies, you name it. But as instrumental as the company has become since its launch in 1963, someone else was doing the job nearly 300 years before. And he did it all by hand.

The 1692 Dutch book, listed in French records as Traité des couleurs servant à la peinture à l’eau, was brought to the public’s attention about a year ago by Dutch historian Erik Kwakkel. Loosely translated, the title means “color treated for water-based paint,” which hints at the handiwork inside by author A. Boogert. As Kwakkel explains, this one-of-a-kind book was created to demonstrate how watercolors could be manipulated to change shade when different measurements of water were added to the mixture. Boogert filled his approximately 800 pages with every example imaginable.
pantone-4Photo: Aix-en-Provence, bibliothèque Méjanes, Ms 1389 (1228).
Beyond being informational, the images from the book are stunning and addictive to flip through. They resemble page after page of Pantone color chips, except without the household name. But this manuscript wasn't a means of referencing fashion trends or your next lipstick shade (as far as we know). Kwakkel reports that the purpose of this book was likely educational. "In the 17th century, an age known as the Golden Age of Dutch Painting, this manual would have hit the right spot." Of course, we can't help but think how relevant this work still is today, no matter how advanced our printing techniques have become. (On the other hand, in 800 pages, did the author ever name a color Marsala?)

The book is currently housed at Bibliothèque Méjanes in Aix-en-Provence, and more of Kwakkel's translation can be found here.

9 Spectacular Underwater Hotels

Why just swim in the sea when you can sleep in the sea? And, while you're at it, you can get a massage underwater, dine like a king underwater, and do, um, other things underwater. All while appreciating the blueness of the ocean, the dancing schools of fish, and the electrifying coral reefs.

Luckily, we live in the 21st century, and there is a small handful of real-life hotels that make it possible for guests to do all that and more. From partially submerged luxury suites to actual submarine stays, read on for nine incredible underwater hotels where you can spend a night sleeping with the fishes, literally.

Ocean Suites At Sentosa, Singapore
For mermaid wannabes who like to bask on dry land, too, Sentosa resort offers 11 luxury suites, each with two levels: one above water, one below. Upper levels feature open living spaces, outdoor patios, and Jacuzzis; downstairs, submerged bedrooms with glass walls allow guests to observe scores of marine life, so you can fall asleep counting fish rather than sheep. And, when all that relaxing makes you thirsty, no worries — your personal butler will fix you a drink.

Anantara Kihavah Villas, Baa Atoll, Maldives
Here at Anantara Kihavah, the luxurious villas themselves are above water and come complete with walk-in wardrobes, pearly tiled bathrooms, and beds with sea views. The underwater experience arrives at dinner: Sea, a glass-walled restaurant three meters below the water, serves seasonal five-course lunches and four-course dinners and houses the world's first underwater wine cellar.

Utter Inn, Vasteras, Sweden
It’s not just luxury islands that have underwater hotels. Utter Inn looks like any other traditional red house you’ll see in Sweden, except it floats on Lake Malaren. Guests are shuttled across the lake by boat to the single-room hotel, which boasts a fully submerged bedroom and a private outdoor deck up top. When night falls, descend into the cozy (albeit sparsely decorated) underwater dwelling, and bask in the view — the space features impressive panoramic windows on all sides.

Atlantis, The Palm, Dubai
Atlantis, Dubai’s accommo-tropolis on The Palm, has two ultra-exclusive, tucked away underwater suites for discerning guests willing to pay the price. Both of the luxurious three-story suites feature floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Ambassador Lagoon. You can even bathe with the fish, thanks to the underwater en suite bathroom — and, in keeping with the luxury theme, the bath amenities are made with real gold.

Huvafen Fushi, North Malé Atoll, Maldives
Here at the private island resort of Huvafen Fushi, luxury is the name of the game. Although the rooms themselves are above water, the hotel is home to the world's first underwater spa. After a morning of snorkeling with bannerfish and fairy basslets, treat yourself to some first-class pampering, served up with seriously spectacular marine views. Make sure to book your service in one of the two rooms with glass walls, and find out what it's like to get a massage while gazing out across the ocean floor.

The Manta Resort, Pemba, Zanzibar
Africa is famous for its safaris, so how about an underwater version, where you can explore coral reefs and marine life from the comfort of your bed? Tanzania’s breathtaking Manta Resort is quite possibly the coolest boutique hotel in the world. It’s a tri-level suite that floats in the middle of the sea, with a sundeck up top and a surface-level deck for dining and lounging. Down below, the tastefully appointed bedroom is a fully submerged glass box, four meters below the ocean's surface, with unobstructed views of the thriving coral reef. Just imagine lying in bed while tropical fish swim around your head.

Lovers Deep, Caribbean
For a cool $136,000 a night, the ultimate underwater couple's experience can be yours at Lovers Deep, a luxe submarine that accommodates two and can be anchored off the Caribbean island of your choice. Complete with champagne on arrival, speedboat transfers from the beach, and an optional Barry White soundtrack (er, okay), it's a romantic and unique way to see colorful Caribbean marine life. Granted, the emphasis seems to be more on giving guests the opportunity to join the Mile-Below Club than to observe the spectacular coral reefs, but there's nothing wrong with that.

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, Rangali Island, Maldives
With eight restaurants, four bars, and two award-winning spas, Conrad Maldives Rangali Island (set across two separate islands in the Maldives) is world-class all the way. The resort itself is positively sublime, as are the stunningly spacious villas, with private plunge pools and floor-to-ceiling sea-view windows. But, all of that is secondary to the resort’s premier highlight, Ithaa Restaurant, one of the most extraordinary dining venues in the world. Guests are taken 16 feet below the ocean's surface to the restaurant, where Maldivian-Western fusion dishes are served alongside champagne cocktails in a glass-domed structure — with uninterrupted views of the marine life, of course.

Jules’ Undersea Lodge, Key Largo, Florida
It may not be the most glamorous spot, but Jules’ Undersea Lodge credits itself with being the original underwater accommodations, developed long before the luxury-tourism boom. Housed in a former 1970s laboratory, the converted two-bedroom guest house is parked off the coast of Key Largo, 21 feet below the water's surface. The only way to get there is by scuba-diving to the hatch — so you might want to travel light. When you've made it inside, you'll find all the facilities of modern life (air conditioning, hot showers, DVD players, and so on), while you marvel through 42-inch windows at the sea life floating by outside. It's ideal for explorers and adventurers, or anyone looking to do the underwater-hotel thing on a budget: A single person can spend a night at Jules for $675. Yep, it's steep compared to a regular hotel, but compared to the more upscale underwater alternatives, it's a steal.

The Must-Have New Apps This Week

The App Store can feel like an overgrown jungle sometimes: Every day, it seems like there are a hundred new apps to filter through. While you want to check them out, it's hard to know what's worth your while (and your precious home screen space). Well, Refinery29 is here to help. Each week, we're going to highlight the five best new apps, on any major mobile platform.

This week, we've got new options for getting your daily dose of the news, some big iOS apps that have finally made their way to Android, and an app that will help you figure out your innate talents, so you can better succeed in your career.

Click through for our picks — you could find your new favorite.

Instagram Layout for Android
Instagram’s creative collage-making app, Layout, is now available on Android. The free app lets you select up to nine photos and arranges them in a variety of different layouts you can choose from. You can also flip, mirror, or swap out images before you import the finished product to Instagram for posting. The app interface is almost identical to the iOS version, which launched about two months ago.

For combining multiple photos into a single, composite image, Layout is one of the cleanest, easiest apps we’ve tried.

Thinking Talents
Here’s an app you MUST download: Thinking Talents (free on iOS), made by Levo. This quiz-style app susses out what your career strengths are based on the way you think, so you can make the most of those talents in your career. Levo explains that a “thinking talent” is something innate, like a love of learning or an inclination towards innovation, rather than something learned. After going through 35 talents, the app will analyze your best traits and help you figure out how to take advantage of them in your work. You can also compare your thinking talents with those of friends or colleagues, to see how you can best work together.

Microsoft Office For Android
Microsoft released its Office suite — Word, PowerPoint, and Excel — for iOS and Android tablets late last year, and now the software trio is finally available for Android phones, too. If you use Microsoft Office at work or at home, you’ll definitely want to give it a download so you can easily compose and edit Word documents, spreadsheets, and PowerPoints on the gol. The apps share a similar feel and design to Microsoft’s other Office versions (mobile and desktop), and they let you comment and track changes. The free apps are currently in beta and are invite-only.

NewsGIF
There are a thousand apps out there for delivering the news: Some are publication-specific, like the New York Times or Wall Street Journal apps; some arrange the news into a beautiful, magazine-inspired interface (like Flipboard). Others focus on giving you just a basic, time-saving summary (like Yahoo News Digest). The latest news aggregation app to land in the App Store takes a decidedly more fun approach. NewsGIF (Free on iOS) pairs the day’s biggest news stories with user uploaded (and upvoted) GIFs. The app says it’s “bite-sized news that is easy to digest,” and with it, you also get a healthy dose of entertainment. You can tap into a story to upvote your favorite GIF representation for the headline, and once logged in, you can submit your own.

As the app is brand new, there’s often just one GIF per post, but you can change that. This may be our new favorite way to get the news each morning.

Perfect Workout
Windows Phone users, you’re slowly seeing more quality apps land on your platform. One of the latest is Perfect Workout (Free). Based on the idea of squeezing in a short but quality workout into your crazy-busy schedule, Perfect Workout acts like a personal trainer on your phone, guiding you through exercises for a 10-minute, total-body workout you can do from home. The app includes a timer for each exercise, and cute, minimalist animations to show how each move is done. You can also set reminders if you’d otherwise forget to squeeze this toning session into your day. Similar apps are available on iOS, Android, and even the Apple Watch, but Perfect Workout is specifically designed for Windows Phone.

Read on for the best new apps from the previous week.

Bleep
Looking for a messaging client that’s truly, actually private? BitTorrent’s Bleep may be the answer. Bleep (Free on iOS, Android, and the desktop) lets you text, send photos, and make voice calls without giving out any personal details. Nothing is stored on a server or in a cloud (Bleep doesn’t use any central servers), so the only copy of the message is between you and the recipient. For sexting — cough, we mean, “private messages” — the app has a “Whisper” mode where the text and images disappear from both devices after 25 seconds. While the app can’t prevent your recipient from taking a screenshot of your message, it does obscure it: The app either blurs the name of the sender or the image — you can only see one at a time. It’s definitely an interesting take on messaging privacy.

WifiMapper
Finding a quality coffee shop to work from that has tasty coffee, ample outlets, and good WiFi is nearly impossible. While it can’t help you with the first two, a new WiFi-finding app called WifiMapper (free on iOS) can at least help you find a spot with a quality connection. It’s got a database of more than 500 million hotspots across the globe, with comments from Foursquare users and WifiMapper users about each locale, so you can find a place whose wireless network doesn’t crawl along like a dial-up connection.

Splice 3.0
Splice (free on iOS ) is a video and slideshow editing app. As the name might suggest, it makes it easy to “splice” together clips from your camera roll — and, as the 3.0 suggests, it’s not a brand new addition to the App Store, but it is a fresh version. You can edit together videos with a variety of effects (like filters, text overlays, and transitions), and choose from an expanded music selection to accompany your creation. You can record your voice to act as narration for your video or slideshow, and for the latter, the app automatically zooms and pans around the photo for a polished finish. A lot comes baked into the app, but it also has in-app purchases if you decide you want more visual or sound effect choices.

Déjà Vu
Here’s an interesting app you can bring with you on your travels, or the next time you take an afternoon stroll through your city. Déjà Vu ($2 on iOS) is an augmented reality app that lets you use your phone’s camera and GPS to explore the world through old photographs. The app helps you navigate to the exact place where a photographer stood, and then you can compare the scene today with what a photographer captured 50 or 100 years ago. It can also notify you when you’re walking near a photographic site, like Fenway Park or Penn Station. Right now, it’s only populated with photos from New York, Boston, and Washington, DC, but more should arrive in the future.

Snap Me Up
If you have trouble waking up in the morning, it might be time to try a unique solution like Snap Me Up (Free on Android). This app pits you with the enviable task of taking a selfie before the alarm shuts off. You read that correctly: The alarm keeps blaring until its facial recognition algorithm detects your bleary-eyed mug in the morning sunshine. The UI is fun and colorful, and the app allows you to share your morning snaps, if you so desire (we’ll stick with deleting those pics IMMEDIATELY). Right now the app does have occasional ads, but a future update to the app will give you the option to get rid of those with an in-app purchase.
